Identifying Opportunities in Economic & Regulatory Trends
Economic Trend: Coronavirus spread & loss of sales for China's tourism and hospitality industries
- Source: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/03/business/economy/SARS-coronavirus-economic-impact-china.html
- I believe there is an opportunity here because there is evidence from the SARS outbreak in 2002 and 2003 that leads us to believe this coronavirus outbreak could not only play havoc with businesses that depend on China, but it has the potential to disrupt global supply chains.
- The prototypical customer are those affected by the coronavirus outbreak and China's economy, including Chinese citizens, people traveling to or from China for business, businesses and countries that depend on China for machinery, components and raw materials, and companies that depend on China's enormous consumer market.
- This opportunity is relatively easy to exploit because this is such a hot topic right now, and many people are either being affected by this crisis right now or living in fear of what it could lead to.
- I saw this opportunity because the effects of the coronavirus outbreak are still just beginning to unfold. And while I am terrified about what this could mean for the health and safety of everyone around the world, I am also aware of the significant effects this could have on the global economy.
Economic Trend: A fight for big tax dollars from Silicon Valley giants threatens to disrupt global trade
- Source: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/31/business/economy/digital-tax-oecd.html
- I believe there is an opportunity here because a consensus has yet to be reached about how to tax large tech companies and businesses that operate online. A new international standard could force large tech companies to pay "digital taxes." These talks carry high financial stakes for large companies that operate in multiple countries.
- The prototypical customer are tech companies, CEOs and leaders of big tech companies, tech startups, leaders of tech startups, businesses that operate online, and leaders of online businesses.
- This opportunity is relatively difficult to exploit because a consensus has not yet been made, so it is still up in the air until an agreement is reached and a decision has been finalized and implemented. A lot is at stake for the these tech companies and the global economy is currently in a fragile state.
- I saw this opportunity because as someone who is interested in entrepreneurship and starting my own business someday, I have always noticed that business and technology go hand-in-hand. So many of the latest startups and booming businesses are in this realm of tech. The fact that these large tech companies have the potential to get hit with these large "digital taxes" is important to be aware of in terms of wanting to start a business in tech or online.
Regulatory Change: Bill introduced in Missouri could require libraries to create review panels to evaluate "age-appropriate" material
- Source: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/03/us/missouri-libraries-sexual-books.html
- I believe there is an opportunity here because last month republican State Representative Ben Baker introduced the "Parental Oversight of Public Libraries Act" in Missouri, in reaction to library events like Drag Queen Story Hour.
- The prototypical customer are library employees, children, teens, parents, drag performers, members of the LGBTQ+ community, authors of children's books, and lawmakers.
- This opportunity is relatively easy to exploit because in recent years the younger generations have pushed for society to become more accepting and inclusive.
- I saw this opportunity because I am currently taking a Queer Communications class and I found it ridiculous that lawmakers would go as far as to create a bill to quiet the LGBTQ+ community out of fear of exposing our children to those who might be different than them. In my opinion, it seems like an abuse of power.
Regulatory Change: 6 countries added to Trump's travel ban
- Source: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/31/us/politics/trump-travel-ban.html
- I believe there is an opportunity here because President Trump just added Nigeria, Myanmar, Eritrea, Kyrgyzstan, Sudan and Tanzania to his list of nations facing stringent travel restrictions in a move to immigration from Africa's most populous nation.
- The prototypical customer are people affected by the travel ban, including people from these countries, people trying to visit these countries, immigrants, officials with the Department of Homeland Security, officials with the state department, lawmakers, and American military.
- This opportunity is relatively easy to exploit because this is a hot topic issue right now. It will be difficult to come up with a solution, but there is a clear problem in need of solving.
- I saw this opportunity because I did some work with Jacksonville's refugee community at the beginning of college and watched several documentaries on the experience of refugees and it his given me a different perspective on the immigrant issue. Trump's travel ban is a pressing issue right now and it is very controversial.
Hi Grace!
ReplyDeleteI thought your post was very relevant and explained well. You picked current topics that were interesting and that were global. I thought it was interesting that we both picked a similar coronavirus article. I didn’t know about the new bill introduced in Missouri but found it interesting. Overall I think you followed the guidelines very well and picked good examples of economic and regulatory trends.
