Solving the Problem
Product idea: My product is a sustainable plant-based fast food restaurant.
The consumption of meat and dairy is not only one of the key contributors to a rising number of health problems, but it's also the single largest contributor to green house gasses, and it's enormously wasteful of our water sources. I would like to open a fast food restaurant that serves fast food made entirely without the use of animal products or artificial ingredients and served in 100% biodegradable and compostable materials.

- A few versions of this idea:
- Plant-based burger joint: This restaurant would offer everyone's classic fast food favorites, just the plant-based versions. There would be burgers, fries, hearty salads, shakes, and other tasty treats made without animal products or artificial ingredients. People can enjoy some soul food and feel good about how they are taking care of their bodies and the planet.
- Not just salad: So often people associate eating healthy with eating boring salads. This restaurant would celebrate the diversity of options there are when it comes to eating healthy and plant-based. The menu would feature fun foods, like loaded nachos, lo mein, lasagna, and enchiladas, things that are not always expected from typical fast food restaurants. The restaurant would focus on being healthy in regards to it's use of simple, real ingredients.
- Support local farmers/Eat in season: This restaurant would utilize resources from local farmers in the area and have a menu that changes with the seasons. This would cut back on the use of green house gasses to ship ingredients from all over the country because we would work with local farmers to use what is in season. And as people leave the restaurant after finishing their meal, there would be stations set up for people to compost their leftovers that would typically end up getting thrown out in the trash.
- I want this restaurant to start out with a location here in Gainesville. The University of Florida is already working towards being more "green" and environmentally friendly, so I think a fast food restaurant with a focus on sustainability could be something that students on campus are interested in. Florida is also a great place in terms of farming, so there is the possibility of working with local farmers to make the restaurant even "greener" by cutting back on shipping costs for ingredients.
- I think this restaurant could be successful in Gainesville because there are hardly any plant-based options for students on or near campus. Most of the time students who are looking for something plant-based end up having one option - a salad. There needs to be a place where any student can get a delicious meal that is not only good for them, but for the environment as well.
