Meet Olivia.

She is a proud Gator at the University of Florida studying microbiology, and she is 20 years old. Born and raised in Miami Beach, she has grown up with a self care mindset. Her mom is a Pilates instructor and her dad is a physician. She lives an active lifestyle and enjoys fueling her body with healthy foods. She believes the food she eats impacts her wellbeing, not just on a cellular level, but it also affects how she feels, how much energy she has, how strong she is, and how capable she can be. After a typical workout at OrangeTheory, she loves making herself the perfect Instagram-able acai bowl topped with fresh fruit and granola.

She recently made the switch to eating a plant-based diet because of the health benefits and the impact on the environment. She enjoys eating balanced meals made up of fruits, vegetables, leafy greens, healthy fats, legumes, and grains. Some of her staple recipes are avocado toast, acai bowls, green smoothies with plant-based protein, and veggie buddha bowls. She also loves finding ways to make her favorite sweet treats, like banana bread and brownies, in a healthier way by using clean, plant-based alternatives.

She lives on the edge of campus so she usually walks to class, but she drives her 2013 white Honda CR-V to and from her OrangeTheory workout classes. Her hobbies include working out, taking cute Instagram pics, going to the beach, practicing yoga and meditation, watching her favorite health-gurus on YouTube, and traveling. Her favorite YouTubers are Whitney Simmons, Sarahs Day, and HealthNut Nutrition. She also loves watching The Bachelor/The Bachelorette with her friends every season, and she just finished Love Is Blind on Netflix. She loves listening to the Goop podcast with Gwyneth Paltrow on her walk to and from class. And she just finished reading The Mind-Gut Connection by Emeran Mayer, MD and In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan.

She wishes that UF had more fun healthy food options on campus, like she is used to having back home in Miami. When she's at home she can easily stop at Raw Juce for a fresh pressed juice or get plant-powered arepas from Love Life Café. When she is in Gainesville she has a harder time living a plant-based lifestyle.

What do I have in common with her?

I am also a super health-conscious person. When I moved to college and started being more independent, it became very important to me that I take care of myself and my health. I started to be more conscious of what I was putting into my body. Like her, I started reading books and listening to podcasts to learn more about nutrition and cooking. I started eating plant-based more often, and I started strength training at the gym at school.

I don't think this is a coincidence.

I came up with this idea because I think UF has very few options on campus for people like me who are trying to live a healthy lifestyle. Many of the fast food places on campus have one token "healthy option," but there are very few convenient places on campus dedicated to quick and healthy, plant-based options.

  1. Hi Grace,
I thought your description was very good because I could name multiple people that I know that fits this description. There definitely is a nice market for plant-based food but I think you nailed what a prospective customer would be like. I like how you included Orange theory and acai bowls because most people who worry about their diet a lot do normally lead a healthier lifestyle.

  2. Hi Grace! Awesome job on specifically outlining your prototypical customer. I can also see that you drew from your own experience and that helped you identify a real deficiency in many college towns like Gainesville. Like Olivia, a lot of college students are health conscious and would love to have a healthy, cheap and quick alternative to say a fast food joint or gator dining. Your business idea would really tap into a market many people are calling for.

  3. Although I do not know you personally, I definitely believe you share many qualities with your avatar. I remember some of these items were on your bug list which is why I think you wanted to create this project to begin with. The avatar you are describing is someone you can find, not only in the Gainesville area, but also within the country. She shares many qualities with health conscience young adults to even those in their 30s and 40s.

  4. Grace, you have done such a great job describing your customer avatar giving a lot of details like favorite show and even youtubers, as well as personal preferences and main idea of being healthy. I like that you mentioned that one of the things that you have in common: "I am also a super health-conscious person. When I moved to college and started being more independent, it became very important to me that I take care of myself and my health..." I think focusing on college students is a great perspective because most students having this challenge.
